Dub Trio - The Shape Of Dub To Come

The Shape Of Dub To Come (New Damage Records) is the fifth studio LP by New York's Dub Trio, the first since 2011's IV (released by ROIR). The title, a reference to Ornette Coleman's 1959 LP, The Shape Of Jazz To Come, is something that this group has been living up to and defining since their 2004 album, Exploring The Dangers Of

Dub Trio

Combining elements of Reggae, Punk, Metal, Shoe-gaze, Electronica and beyond, along with impeccably tight musicianship and dubbing to the maximum, one of the few bands that any comparison would be justified is Blind Idiot God

This one starts off strong with "World Of Inconvenience," which teams the trio up with vocalist, King Buzzo of The Melvins, for a grinding trudge through the mud of primordial despair. (See the official video below.)

Next is the instrumental "Spyder" which typifies the mash-up of hard dub-reggae grooves and abrupt, shredding, metal riffs by David Holmes that the band is known for.

"Fought The Line" features the vocals of Troy Sanders (Mastadon). Entertainment for metal and dub-heads, alike!

My personal favorite on the album, "Bad Comrade," wraps up side A in a fine style with a killer bass-line from Stu Brooks. This is what I would refer to as a dub-abstraction, no doubt.

"Life Signs," the first tune on side B, is more ambient than most of the album, with rhythmic soundscapes not dissimilar to something that Amon Tobin might make.

The next one features vocals from Me'Shell NdegéOcello and is a message from the Lord called "Forget My Name Dub."

"Needles" is another more ambient track, organic with acoustic guitar and minimal rhythm.

The final song, "Computery," is one of the most interesting on the album, dealing in different time signature than what Reggae music is typically relegated to.

New Damage Records

Overall, The Shape Of Dub To Come is a good album, it shouldn't disappoint any existing fans and should bring them some new ones, as well. Thanks for reading and check in soon at CULTCHA Clash Outer National.

CULTCHA Clash Outer National Record Review: JK Flesh - In Your Pit

JK Flesh - In Your Pit (Pressure Records)

JK Flesh - In Your Pit EP

Today, I'll be writing about the In Your Pit EP by JK Flesh (Justin K. Broadrick, Godflesh, formerly of Napalm Death among others) and I'll briefly mention a few other pieces of fresh wax that have been put out semi-recently by the Berlin record label Pressure.

The In Your Pit EP starts out with the mowing, grinding, growling down-tempo drone of "In Your Pit" and the remix by The Bug, otherwise known as Kevin Martin. Really powerful stuff, most enjoyable at extremely high decibels, the remix infuses more percussive elements to the pumping bass of the original. It's reminiscent, to me, of some of the "industrial" noise of the eighties but sure to appeal to young Bass-heads hungering for the dark, deep frequencies contained here.

JK Flesh - In Your Pit

The B-Side features "Paranoid Archetype" and "Rub Me Out," two more driving, thumping, pulsating tracks of gritty, grimy and dirty, distorted noise. This record is an excellent example of Pressure's efforts to expand the realms of dub. (also available from Bleep.)

Pressure

Another superb slab of vinyl that came out last year on Pressure that I would like to mention is a project called Flame 1 which is a collaboration between The Bug and Burial. The A-side, "Fog," bounces with layers of atmospheric effects that create a density that can be felt yet still maintains it's sparseness. "Shrine," the AA-side tune sounds eerie and creeping, with a compelling rhythm, this is the type of atypical dub that draws me towards artists like Burial and The Bug.
Vinyl is still available at Bleep.

Miss Red

Also on Pressure is Miss Red's K.O.LP, Floor Weapons Vol. 1 by G36 (which was featured on the premiere broadcast of CULTCHA Clash Outer National - Global-Community-Radio) and "Vex" by dub-poet, Nazamba which was produced by G36.

These titles are available at Bandcamp as well as Bleep.com and links have been included where highlighted.

The Mixes: Industrial Funk / Dub Abstractions III

Mixed & Written by Selecta J-Cut

Selcta J-Cut -
Industrial Funk / Dub Abstractions III

https://www.mixcloud.com/selectajcut/industrial-funk-dub-abstractions-iii/

This is the third edition in the reboot of V.E.O.T.R. (see original video episodes Here).
This time around I will dissect and discuss another mix from my (all-vinyl) Industrial Funk / Dub Abstractions series, Volume III, which was recorded in 2012.

This one is, pretty much, a continuation of the idea from the first two, interesting and somewhat obscure (in most cases) alternative music that is funky or dub-influenced, subjective to my own tastes and opinions.

Again, I will make this disclaimer, the title is my own description, some artists may take the label "Industrial" as a pejorative, or a purist would say that Industrial is exclusively Throbbing Gristle and music that was released on their Industrial Records. I'm not attempting to classify or categorize any of the artists included here, I'm using the term as a personal interpretation as more of a reaction to the music industry itself than any actual distinct "sound."

Many of the artists included in this mix are active now, links have been included (highlighted) where possible, as it is our goal at CULTCHA Clash Outer National to educate and entertain.

Annie Anxiety Bandez -
As I Lie In Your Arms
