CULTCHA Clash Outer National Record Review: Jah Wobble - A Very British Coup

CULTCHA Clash Outer National Record Review

Jah Wobble ft. Keith Levene, Richard Dudanski, Mark Stewart, Andrew Weatherall & Youth - A Very British Coup

(2019 Cadiz Music)

Jah Wobble - A Very British Coup (2019 Cadiz Music)

This one finally came out after an apparent legal delay. Jah Wobble has put together quite an impressive roster on this tribute to "Brexit," and the political debacle which has since ensued.
Wobble's former P.I.L. bandmate, Keith Levene lends his unique guitar skills to the effort, along with Richard Dudanski on drums, Killing Joke's Youth on additional bass and keys, mixmaster, Andrew Weatherall providing loops, and vocals by Mark Stewart (The Pop Group / Mark Stewart & The Maffia).

The supergroup does not disappoint with this release, an irresistible groove, with the lower tempo dub version aka the "Dogma Mix," and the manic diatribe that Mark Stewart has long been known for. It cleverly critiques the political fuckery that abounds, and further illustrates the fallacies that we're exposed to and victimized by from the ruling elites on both sides of the Atlantic...

The 12" single is pressed on yellow vinyl by Cadiz Music

Unfortunately, it does not appear that it can be purchased at this time, presumably due to the legal dispute.

A Very British Coup

All digital avenues of listening have apparently been blocked, too. The "Dogma Mix" was included on episode 2 of my weekly show on CULTCHA Clash Outer National - Global-Community-RadioThe Dublight Zone, and can be heard on the link below, for the time being.

CULTCHA Clash Outer National Record Review: Massive Attack v. Mad Professor - Part II (Mezzanine Remixes)

CULTCHA Clash Outer National Record Review

Massive Attack v. Mad Professor -
Part II (Mezzanine Remix Tapes '98)

Virgin EMI Records

Massive Attack v. Mad Professor - Part II (Mezzanine Remix Tapes '98)
Reviewed by Selecta J-Cut

This is the second collaborative LP between Bristol, U.K.'s Trip-Hop innovators, Massive Attack and digital-dub maestro, Mad Professor. On 1995's No Protection, Massive Attack's 1994 album, Protection was reconstructed by Mad Professor at his Ariwa studio (where members of Massive Attack and Soul II Soul had previously recorded as The Wild Bunch).

Part II (originally from 1998 but this is the first time that it's been released as an LP) finds the tunes from Mezzanine stripped down to their raw cores, frequencies tweaked and peaked with psychosis-inducing bass and a cosmic array of effects. Fans won't be disappointed by this one, from start to finish.

Starting off on an eery note, the haunting "Metal Banshee (Mad Professor Mix One)" is a standout cut, without a doubt.

"Angel (Angel Dust)" rides along on a steppers style riddim, wandering in a zone that exists between electronica and dancehall.

The exotic, ambient groove of "Teardrop (Mazaruni Dub One)" is another pick of mine.

Side E (as the first side of the vinyl release is labeled) is wrapped up with the bubbling dancehall riddim, "Inertia Creeps (Floating On Dubwise)".

Side F (side 2) starts with "Risingson (Setting Sun Dub Two)" which is saturated in delays and a galloping hi-hat driving an ethereal journey.

"Exchange (Mountain Steppers Dub" is another that nimbly walks the line between roots dub and electronic dance music.

"Wire (Leaping Dub)" comes next, showcasing the production techniques of Mad Professor as well as Massive Attack unique musical style.

The final tune, "Group Four (Security Forces Dub)" is ambient-psychedelic dub at it's finest.

Vinyl Encounters of the... Rewind! - Themes Of Political Revolution II

Vinyl Encounters of the...Rewind!

The Mixes: Themes Of Political Revolution II: Hindsight Is 2020

Mixed & Written by Selecta J-Cut

Themes Of Political Revolution 2: Hindsight Is 2020

This is the latest edition in the  reboot of Vinyl Encounters of the...Rewind! (see original video episodes Here), my blog about music, records and the artists who make them.
This time I will break down my 2019 Senator Bernie Sanders endorsement mix, Themes Of Political Revolution II: Hindsight Is 2020. It's an all-vinyl mix except for soundbites of Sanders and other public figures, who's statements were worked into the mix where I found the message to be fitting or appropriate. (if you haven't already, check out Themes Of Political Revolution 1)

Disclaimer: This is my personal endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders for President of the United States. It is not implied that any of the artists included in this mix share my endorsement, nor should it be construed that the ideas expressed here are all those of Senator Sanders or his campaign. I have merely put together a collection of songs that, to me, convey a message of Political, Economic, Environmental and/or Social Justice.

Even though the campaign was unsuccessful at clenching the nomination from the DNC for the 2016 election, it was successful at bringing the talking points of the party considerably to the left. The mid-term elections went in the party's favor, especially where progressive candidates were running. So, hopefully 2020 will have a different outcome.

As a DJ, i felt that a mix of songs with messages congruent to his policies was the most effective means that I have of supporting the cause...

www.berniesanders.com

The first tune is "No Escape," gritty, post-industrial dub by G36 from their No Escape / Black Mass 12" which came out in 2018 on Hotline Records.

The opening speech is from the 2020 campaign announcement to a crowd in Brooklyn, N.Y.  he had to stop the enthusiastic, young audience from chanting his name with "No....it is not Bernie, it is you, it is us, together..." The crowd was very receptive to his message to "transform this country, and finally create an economy and a government that works for all of us, not just the one percent..."

After that, comes "Leftist" from The Revolutionaries, which was released in 1976 on the Channel One LP, Revolutionary Sounds.

The campaign announcement recaps many of the policies from Sanders' 2016 campaign, this time pushing universal healthcare even further with a Medicare For All proposal.

From 1976's Ital Corner LP is "Bloody Dunza" by Prince Jazzbo, another dread warning about the root of evil.

"Everyday Another Sanction" features vocals by Chezidek and is from Coldcut x On-U Sound's 2017 masterpiece, Outside The Echo Chamber.

The soundbites are Sanders speaking of the oppressive right-wing government of Israel, which the U.S. gives billions in military aid to annually, and it's racism and mistreatment of the Palestinian people.

Following that is an Arabic / Japanese version of "War" by Neyssatou & Likkle Mai from the 2019 Pay It All Back 7 compilation, as well as from the forthcoming album, Dub No Frontiers.

"Socialist Dub" is from Jah Thomas meets The Roots Radics Dubbing LP on Clocktower Records affiliated label, Abraham.

Here, joker-smoker, Tommy Chong gives an endorsement of the Sanders campaign's policies of humane immigration, a living wage, equality for all and of course, the legalization of our favorite medicinal plant...

"Legalize It" is off of the 2012 Life Music, Legalize It 45 by Andrew Tosh.

Next, is another from Pay It All Back 7, "One Law For The Rich" is a Sherwood & Pinch track with Daddy Freddy & Dubiterian.

"Wall Street, insurance companies, drug companies, the military industrial complex, the prison industrial complex, the fossil fuel industry and a corrupt campaign finance system that allows billionaires to buy elections" are some of the targets of the campaign, and those groups are certainly no fans of Senator Sanders.

"Money Money" by Horace Andy is from the 2012 Jamaican Records reissue of the Striker Lee 7" from the mid-70's, Money Money.

Dr. Cornel West endorses Sanders, once again, eloquently articulating on his moral consistency.

"I Need A Roof" is from The Revolutionaries 1976 album, Revolutionary Sounds. The vocal version of the tune by The Mighty Diamonds runs next, taken from their 1976 LP, Right Time.

Also on the Mean Girl riddim, is "Babylon A Listen," from Sizzla's 1997 Xterminator 7" single, Babylon A Listen.

"If love was a thing that money could buy, the rich would have love and the poor would have a lot of hate..."

"A So We Stay" features deejay legend Big Youth chatting over a Dennis Brown tune, A So We Stay was released in 1973 by Joe Gibbs.

"Not me, us," Sanders explains here, is the mantra of the campaign, which now has over a million individual donors.

"Shank I Sheck" is off of the Shank I Sheck 7" by Bobby Ellis & The Revolutionaries which came out in 1978 on High Note.

Next comes Bounty Killer, on the Kingston 11 (Jammy's) version of the Shank I Sheck riddim, with "Down In The Ghetto," from the 1994 Down In The Ghetto 7" single. Then Junior Reid joins the warlord for the anti-gun-violence, "World Too Haunted," from the 1994 single, World Too Haunted.

"Now it is true, I did not have a father who gave me millions of dollars to build luxury skyscrapers, casinos and country clubs..." Sanders says of his upbringing.

"To Be Rich Should Be A Crime" is by Jeb Loy Nichols, off of his 2010 album, Long Time Traveller, which was reissued by On-U Sound in 2016.

Vintage New Age Steppers continues the On-U Sound vibe with their remake of "Fade Away" by Junior Byles, sung here by Ari Up from the 1980 LP, New Age Steppers.
The version is called "Earthwire Line" and is from the New Age Steppers / Creation Rebel split album released in 1981, Threat To Creation.

Next, comes "Independent Man" by Creation Rebel, which appeared on the Independent Man / Creation Rebel 10" Disco-plate released in 1982. The version, "Independence," appeared on Dub Syndicate's One Way System, from 1983.

"Climate change is not a hoax," Sanders states, "but it is an existential threat to our country and the entire planet..." The Green New Deal for confronting the climate crisis is yet another example of his progressive policy proposals.

"Piece Of The Earth" comes from Longtime, the 1996 LP by Little Roy.

"Every man For Every Man" is off of Ghetto Priest's 2017 album, Every Man For Every Man.

From 1978's Rock Against Racism 7" single, China Street come in with the punk-reggae jam, "Rock Against Racism."

Killer Mike, long time Sanders supporter, explains how Bernie's agenda matches that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Weak Heart Version" is off of the Ruts DC vs Mad Professor Present Rhythm Collision LP, originally released in 1982, this is recorded from the 2002 Select Cuts reissue, Rhythm Collision Vol. 1 & Remix Versions (also featuring Zion Train).

Nina Turner's impassioned words hit hard, "the cause is right, and the time is now!"

From 1978's Peace Treaty 7" single on Top Ranking from reggae legend, Jacob Miller, is the dub from Fatman Riddim Section, "Togetherness Rock."

"Two White Rat" comes from Ninjaman off of the Volcano 7" Two White Rat.

Words from A. Philip Randolph and Walter Reuther from The Great March On Washington For Jobs And Freedom, August 28, 1963, which Sanders attended,  appear from the 1963 Gordy Records release, The Great March On Washington.

"Defend The Poor" is next, from Bounty Killer off of his 1994 Champion Records 7" single, Defend The Poor.  The version that follows is from Buss Up Pants Waist, the 1998 Red Rat single on Bankeylus.

Another Bounty Killer tune. "Fed Up (Remix)" is from his 2002 album, Ghetto Dictionary: The Mystery.

"Get Ur Freak On (Instrumental)" was repurposed here from Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot and Timbaland's 2000 hit, Get Ur Freak On.

Sanders points out the embarrassing rate of incarceration in the U.S., blaming the prison-industrial-complex and the war on drugs, meaningful criminal justice reform will be a priority for the administration.

Marianne Faithfull delivers her rendition of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" next, from her 1979 LP, Broken English.

"Militant" is another dirty, digital dub from G36, on their 2018 Pressure EP, Floor Weapons Volume 1.

Comprehensive immigration reform, a path toward citizenship and legal status for all DACA recipients are also priorities of the campaign.

Also on Pressure, "Vex" appears on 2018's Vex 12" single by Nazamba.

"Muzikal Warriahz Version" comes next, dubbed by Jah B / Dub Me Records from the 2017 Macka B Muzikal Warriahz single on Roots Cooperation.

"This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism, it would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment..." Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Freedom Fighter" is from the 1979 Cry Tuff released Freedom Fighter 7" single by Jah Brown, recorded here from the 2011 reissue.

The following tune is by dub poet extraordinaire, Linton Kwesi Johnson, from his 1984 album, Making History, "Wat About Di Workin' Claas?"

"Justice" from The Terrorists, was released in 1980 by Max's Kansas City Records on the 7" single, Justice / Riis Park. Although the song is actually about justice for a broken heart, only a short clip was used for the context of the mix.

The clip is from a report on the Charlottesville, VA protest of May, 2017 at which a white nationalist terrorist drove a car into a crowd of protesters, killing Heather Heyer.

The next set of tunes are reactions to the current administration and it's wrong-doings.

"Nazi Punks - Fuck Off" by Dead Kennedys is from the 1981 Alternative Tentacles compilation, Let Them Eat Jellybeans.

"No Trump, No KKK, No Fascist USA" is a protest anthem by old-school Texas punk-rockers, M.D.C. that was released on the 2017 split 7" on Swamp Cabbage Records, Millions Of Delusional Citizens / The Antidon'ts. The original version of this was released on the 1982 LP, Millions Of Dead Cops, as "Born To Die."

Canadian hardcore band D.O.A. revamp their 1981 song, "Fucked Up Ronnie," with 2016's "Fucked Up Donald," from the Sudden Death Records released Fucked Up Donald 7" single.

If all else fails and "political revolution" becomes an impossibility, the next tune goes out to the cynics...
"Sabotage" is from Feederz 2017 Slope Records  7" single, W.W.H.D.? (What Would hitler Do?).

The final tune of the mix is "Go! (Club Mix)" by Tones On Tail from their 1984 single on Beggars Banquet, Lions / Go! not a political tune but the energy seemed right.

"We're going to win this election because we are putting together the strongest grassroots campaign in the history of American politics..." confirms Bernie, who promises rather than dividing people by their differences, this campaign will bring people together.
"...we are together, and together, we will transform this country."

That concludes this edition, thanks for checking it out and come back soon for the next Vinyl Encounters of the...Rewind!
